Plaid Back Public Service Strikes
Mon. March 8, 2010
Workers on strike over redundancy terms have been supported in their actions by local politicians. Adam Price MP and Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM have backed protesters who say they will lose up to a third of their entitlements under the Labour Westminster government’s proposals. Plaid’s Westminster candidate in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, Jonathan Edwards, has also been supporting campaigners by joining picket lines in the county.
Adam Price MP said:
“I am extremely concerned at how these changes will impact workers in my constituency. A large number of local people are employed in services such as HMRC, the Welsh Assembly Government and the DVLA and they would be seriously affected by the government’s proposals. I have signed motions in parliament backing local workers and have spoken to the PCS Union to pledge my support.”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM added:
“I am fully supportive of this protest and I am pleased that the Plaid group at the Assembly committed to backing protesters and not crossing the picket line. Civil service workers and public sector employees have been hit hard by this government and these proposals will have a dramatic impact, especially during such troubling economic times.”
Plaid‘s Jonathan Edwards said:
“I visited workers on the picket line and spoke to them about their concerns at the changes the government intends to implement. It is completely understandable that front line staff are concerned that the terms they have had agreed for some time are being changed. It is deeply disturbing that whilst the lowest paid public service workers are seeing the government tearing up their contracts, the same government are saying they can not do anything about banker’s bonuses.”
