Assembly Announces Referendum for Wales
Wed. February 10, 2010
Wales will hold a referendum on further law making powers after a crucial and historic vote at the National Assembly for Wales. The decision has been welcomed by local Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas who took part in the vote held on Tuesday (February 9th).
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:
“I am delighted that a key pledge put forward by the Plaid driven One Wales government has been delivered. This is the result of a lot of hard work and persistence and I am excited that we will now be having a debate on shaping the future of Wales. The Carmarthen vote was critical in securing the establishment of the Assembly and I am sure that the people of the county will have an equal passion for taking part in this debate.”
Adam Price MP added:
“I think everyone recognises that the current system is simply not working. You only have to look at proposals by the Assembly on the Welsh language or life saving measures on fire sprinkler systems that are still waiting to get passed years after they were submitted. The referendum will help tidy up the system so that there does not need to be such delays in helping the Welsh public.”
Plaid ‘s Westminster candidate for the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr seat Jonathan Edwards said:
“The Welsh government was at the forefront of the smoking ban, which would have saved far more lives if implemented earlier, whilst its ProAct and ReAct schemes have saved thousands of jobs during the recession. The One Wales government has proved it is delivering for the people of Wales and this referendum is simply about giving it the necessary tools it needs to be able to help shield us further from the impact of the London recession.”
