Calls for Action After Petrol Prices Up 107% under Labour
Sat. April 10, 2010
Local politicians have called for urgent action to be taken as part of their ‘Stop the fuel hike’ campaign. When Labour came to power in 1997 the average cost of petrol was 57.9p per litre. With costs now well above £1.20p it represents around a 107% increase in 13 years. Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Plaid’s Westminster candidate Jonathan Edwards have called the hike totally unacceptable. The AA estimated that in the year leading up to April 2010 the cost of running the family car increased by a staggering £52 per month.
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM added:
“The fact that petrol costs have spiralled by around 107% under Labour is a disgrace. The fact is that for many people in Rural Wales public transport is not good enough and driving a car is essential. With people already suffering badly due to the recession prices of £1.20p and above at the pump are having a major impact on people’s lives. It is with those concerns in mind that Plaid’s ‘Stop the Hike’ campaign was launched.”
Plaid‘s Westminster candidate Jonathan Edwards said:
“In the past we have called for the establishment of a fuel regulator as an independent voice to look at the oil market. We have also called on the government to freeze fuel duty to help those that are forced to rely on running a car. The unfair fuel tax announced by Labour during the last budget only risks damaging the economy at a time when we should be doing all we can to try and support struggling communities and industry.”
