Calls for council contingency plan to help working parents
Carmarthenshire County Council is being urged to put in place contingency plans for any future snow which results in school closures. Adam Price MP, Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Plaid’s Westminster candidate Jonathan Edwards have contacted the council and highlighted the impact the poor weather has had on working parents.
Adam Price MP said:
“Obviously the safety of children is paramount and must always be the first consideration when making the decision to close a school. However, what has been seen over the past weeks is that with schools closing many working parents are finding it difficult to take time off work. They are either having to give up holiday’s or find themselves losing out on pay. A number of people have contacted our constituency offices concerned at the amount of time they have had to take off work. We would like to see contingency plans put in place so that if persistent poor weather keeps schools shut there is a provision put in place to help working parents.”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:
“We have written to the council asking them to look at what options could be explored. Last year there was a lot of snow and again this year we have seen schools shut. This is an increasing pattern and alongside the way the council reacts to clearing the roads and gritting side streets I think it is important they look at what can be done to ensure that working parents can continue to work with schools closed.”
Jonathan Edwards said:
“We all accept that the weather can be unpredictable and that there will be days that schools close. What would be ideal is that knowing the way the weather has affected parents Carmarthenshire County Council examine ways to minimize the impact if the situation arises again.”
