Calls for more support for service personnel to coincide with Armed Forces Day
Tue. June 22, 2010
Local politicians are marking armed forces day by calling on the UK government to do more to offer support to those serving abroad and for veterans of the service. Jonathan Edwards MP, Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Nerys Evans AM will be supporting Armed Forces Day on Saturday June 26th. The Carmarthenshire representatives are backing calls for greater help for those currently serving as well as those who have left active duty.
Jonathan Edwards MP said:
“I am delighted to give my support to Armed Forces Day. Front line service personnel do an incredible job under very difficult circumstances. Hopefully this event will be an opportunity for the UK government to recognise the commitment the armed forces give to us, and examine how they can return that.
Currently too many troops are trying to do their jobs without the proper equipment. If the UK government is asking them to be in foreign countries fighting these wars the very least they can do is provide them with the right kit.”
Nerys Evans AM added:
“Many of my constituents are currently serving in the armed forces, or have close friends or family that do, and so I am very please to I back Armed Forces day. The day is about supporting not just those currently serving but also veterans. There are some shocking statistics that show people leaving the services are simply not given the duty of care they deserve. A staggering 1 in 10 prisoners are made up of former armed forces personnel. I will be supporting Armed forces day by calling on the Tory government to recognise the dedication of our veterans by giving them the right support after they had left active duty.”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:
“I believe that members of the armed forces deserve to be treated with dignity and respect when they return to civilian life and I’m appalled by the way in which successive Westminster governments
