Concerns raised as residents lose patience over doctors surgery
Tue. June 8, 2010
Local politicians Jonathan Edwards MP and Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM have joined residents in raising their concerns over the planned closure of Penygroes doctors surgery. A new surgery is due to be built in Cross Hands and will serve residents as far as Llandybie. Many residents have highlighted their disapproval at the lack of consultation in advance of the plans being approved and have stated that a notice in the surgery did not go far enough as many will not have needed to visit the surgery. Furthermore many have questioned why the exhibitions of the proposed surgery are only being displayed in Cross Hands and not in Penygroes.
Jonathan Edwards MP said:
“I have written to the Hywel Dda Health Board to ascertain the reasons behind the proposed closure and to emphasise the concerns I have with regards to these plans. This will come as a double blow to residents in the Llandybie community who have already lost their local GP service and had transferred to Penygroes. A panel was established in January 2008 to look at the possibility of developing a multi-agency centre in the area. As residents we were told by the then Local Health Board’s Director of Planning and Primary Care that their plan was to bring additional resources to the area not take them away. I fear the move will further isolate some of the most vulnerable people in the community”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM added:
“I too have written to Hywel Dda Local Health Board following the large number of representations made to Jonathan and myself from residents in a number of communities such as Penygroes, Llandybie, Saron and Capel Hendre. It simply isn’t acceptable that patients will have considerably further to travel to access a GP service. The move will fly in the face of a person’s right to free health care as the cost of travelling will provide a barrier for many people wanting to visit their doctor”
