Council Criticised Over Luncheon Club Closures
Carmarthenshire County Council has been urged to reconsider their proposals to close luncheon clubs in the county. Local Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Adam Price MP have highlighted their concern at the detrimental impact these closures will have on the elderly residents that make use of them. They have now written to the council taking up their constituent’s fears and calling for a reversal of the decision.
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:
“A number of people have contacted our office to express their concerns at the Labour-Independent council’s proposals to shut luncheon clubs in the county. The elderly and vulnerable residents that make use of these facilities are feeling very let down, and understandably so. Not only do these facilities offer hot, healthy and nutritious meals to its users but also the opportunity to socialise, often the only opportunity. It is outrageous that their importance is being undermined in this way.”
Adam Price MP added:
“I have written to the council head of integrated services stating that I can not accept that that services as important as these luncheon clubs are to be cut. This is a clear example of the needs of our elderly residents being disregarded. It is evident to me that closing shutting these services will have a detrimental impact on the wellbeing of those that rely on them.”
Plaid‘s Westminster candidate Jonathan Edwards said:
“I find it shocking that whilst the council persist with spending thousands of pounds of taxpayers money on self promotion, their own self publicising newspapers and investigating the possibility of their own TV channel they are simultaneously planning to cut important front line services to the county’s elderly population. I hope that the council reconsider their position on this and recognise the role luncheon clubs play in our communities.”
