HMRC Closures Condemned with Government Service Failing
Statistics by the National Audit Office have shown that as many as 44 million calls have been missed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs over the 2008/09 period, a performance the Audit Office described as ‘unacceptable.’ In response to the figures Adam Price MP has condemned the Labour government’s decision to close local HMRC branches.
Adam Price said:
“Gordon Brown and New Labour’s decision to close HMRC branches right across Wales, including in Carmarthenshire, putting staff out of work, is a disaster with so many calls going unanswered. This is a vitally important time for people and businesses that need to get in touch with the HMRC.”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:
“If anything, with such a demand on HMRC, you would think the government would want to increase the staff numbers rather than reduce them. It is yet another example of how Labour is failing people struggling with the recession.”
Plaid’s Westminster candidate Jonathan Edwards added:
“We were critical of the decision to close the Carmarthenshire HMRC branch and those fears have proved to have been well placed. At a time when businesses need grater accessibility to advice they are being denied the service they require.”
