March Referendum Welcomed
Tue. June 15, 2010
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Jonathan Edwards MP have welcomed the news that the Secretary of State for Wales has given the go-ahead for a March referendum on law making powers for the Welsh Government. The referendum is a major success for Plaid in Government who are now delivering on a key coalition promise. A successful referendum will see the end of the current complicated and expensive system allow Wales to make its own decisions on key areas such as Health and Education.
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:
“Holding the referendum on law-making powers for Wales is huge testament to the hard work of Plaid in government – getting it on the agenda and keeping it there.
The current system is tired, slow, expensive and out-dated – and desperately needs to be changed. The democratically elected National Assembly has every right to legislate on issues affecting the lives of the people of Wales.”
Jonathan Edwards MP added:
“This is a huge success for Plaid but more importantly a huge success for Wales. Consistent polls have shown people want further devolution. A recent BBC Wales / ICM poll concluded that as many as 62 per cent of people believe the Assembly should have most influence on Welsh affairs.
The referendum will give those people a chance to make their voice heard and to give Wales the right to make decisions on the issues that affect us without having to go to London to ask for that permission.
I’m very much looking forward to making the case for the YES campaign on a cross party basis.Carmarthenshire has a fine tradition in supporting devolution and if the correspondence I have had on the matter is anything to go by I hope that will continue to be the case.”
