MP Concerned for Post Office Revenues
Thu. May 20, 2010
A Carmarthenshire MP has contacted the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters after concerns were raised about post office services. Jonathan Edwards MP has written to the federation after local branches outlined their fears that proposals by Camelot to provide mobile top-ups and bill payments to be made through its lottery terminals would poach revenue from sub-post offices and sub-postmasters. The Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Member of Parliament has also written to the Westminster government seeking their views on the plans.
Jonathan Edwards MP said:
“Having spoken to some sub-postmasters I am naturally concerned that these proposals will lead to revenue that would otherwise go to local post offices being diverted elsewhere. I have written to the government and to the NFSB asking for their views on the issue and what can be done to safeguard the incomes of local post offices.
There is of course also a fear that vulnerable people who are on low incomes could be tempted to gamble their money when paying bills at a lottery terminal.”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM added:
“Plaid Cymru have consistently fought to protect post offices as a vital community service. Protecting their businesses is not only about the individual post offices but about the role they play in our communities. These proposals, on the face of it, would certainly appear to lead to greater financial strain being placed on the post office network, which has already seen a number of its services taken away.”
