Regional Pay Proposals Slammed By County Politicians
Wed. July 7, 2010
Carmarthen East and Dinefwr local MP has slammed proposals put forward by the Tory-Lib Dem coalition to introduce regional pay levels. Under the proposals people working in one part of the UK could earn more than someone working elsewhere for doing exactly the same work. Jonathan Edwards MP has attacked the plans, which were also previously supported by New Labour, which he says will have a negative impact on public sector workers in the county.
Jonathan Edwards MP said:
“I am appalled by these plans. It is totally disgraceful that the ConDem coalition and New Labour before them think that workers in Carmarthenshire should be getting paid less than workers elsewhere in the UK for doing the exact same work. How they can justify this is beyond me. It is already bad enough that they have proposed a 2 year pay freeze and will be looking to cut thousands of jobs. This move will only lead to greater difficulties in local economies.”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:
“These are very concerning ideas being put forward. Not only does it create an unfair pay scale it will lead to a talent drain as people leave local communities in search of better pay. We have to start retaining the talents we have in the county in order to build a strong local economy and that includes paying people on a level playing field.”
Nerys Evans AM said:
“Any public sector workers in the county should take the opportunity to ask Simon Hart MP and Angela Burns AM why it is they believe county workers should be getting paid less than people in areas such as London. These people have been elected to serve the county but instead they are happy to sign up to proposals that will make people in this part of Wales worse off than those in English cities. It shows a complete lack of consideration for protecting local workers and local jobs.”
